Frequently asked questions
What is a frost date?
A frost date is the typical date of the last freeze in spring or the first freeze in fall at a location. We use NOAA’s 32°F freeze dates from the 1991–2020 climate normals, plus 28°F (hard freeze) and 36°F (frost possible) dates on each city page. Frost vs. freeze explained.
How accurate are frost dates?
They are 30-year statistics, not forecasts. In any given year the actual date can be weeks earlier or later. That’s why each page shows 10%, 50% and 90% dates, plus the National Weather Service forecast for the coming nights.
Why does my ZIP use a station in another town?
Only weather stations with long, complete records have freeze statistics. We use the nearest one and show its distance; local terrain can shift dates. See the methodology.
