Frequently asked questions
How do I find the UV index right now in my location?
Enter your five-digit US ZIP code or choose “Use my location” above. We open the nearest supported city, where you can see the forecast for the current local hour, today’s peak and the hourly UV forecast. The ZIP lookup selects the nearest supported city rather than a separate forecast for every ZIP code.
What do UV index numbers mean?
0–2 is low, 3–5 moderate, 6–7 high, 8–10 very high and 11+ extreme (WHO categories). EPA recommends sun protection at 3 and above. The UV index scale, explained.
When is UV strongest?
Around solar noon, when the sun is highest, usually between late morning and mid-afternoon. Each city page shows the hourly forecast and solar noon.
Is the UV index a forecast or a measurement?
A forecast. NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center forecasts the UV index for each hour of the day from the sun’s angle, the ozone layer, cloud cover, elevation and aerosols, and the EPA publishes it by ZIP code. How our UV pages work.
